Building Materials Landed Cost Calculator
Estimate the full delivery budget for a mixed building materials order from China.
Calculate the delivered budget
The factory invoice is one part of importing building materials. Build a line-by-line estimate that includes transport, inspection, packing, destination charges and applicable import costs. Use one currency and record the date and assumptions behind each quote.
Landed cost calculator
This adds the amounts you enter. It does not determine tariff classifications, tax bases, exchange rates or eligibility for preferential treatment. A zero duty field means no amount was entered, not that the product is duty free.
Collect the inputs before comparing suppliers
| Cost | Evidence |
|---|---|
| Goods | Approved specification and dated invoice |
| Origin costs | Collection, warehouse, packing and export quote |
| Freight | Route, equipment, validity and surcharges |
| Destination | Handling, brokerage, delivery and unloading scope |
| Duties and taxes | Broker calculation for product, origin and destination |
| Other costs | Inspection, testing, bank charges and contingency |
HS codes and trade remedies
Classification depends on the actual product, material and use. A mixed shipment needs product-level classification rather than one broad building materials code. Give the broker technical descriptions, composition, photographs and manufacturer details before shipment.
Ordinary duty is not always the whole import charge. Check whether anti-dumping, countervailing or other measures apply to the goods and supplier. For the United States, consult CBP guidance on AD/CVD. For the EU, Access2Markets supports checks by product code, origin and destination. Have a qualified broker confirm the current treatment.
A worked planning example
Suppose goods cost 30,000, origin handling and packing 1,200, freight and insurance 4,000, destination delivery 1,500, broker-confirmed duties 2,100, taxes 3,000 and inspection or other costs 700. The total cash budget is 42,500 in the chosen currency. These are invented planning inputs, not freight quotes or tariff rates.
If recoverable taxes apply to your business, separate the cash required at import from the eventual accounting cost with your adviser. Do not remove taxes from the shipping budget merely because recovery may be possible later.
Avoid double-counting and missing exclusions
Check what the supplier delivery term includes. A freight quote may omit destination handling, examinations, storage or site unloading. Record every inclusion and exclusion, and do not add the same origin service twice when it is already in the goods price.
Compare a base case with a delay case that includes storage, extra handling and a split shipment. For dense materials, cost per cubic metre alone can be misleading. Use actual weights and the consolidation plan.
Buyer questions
Can I use one duty rate for the whole container?
Not safely without broker confirmation. Different products and origins can have different treatment.
Is the cheapest freight quote the lowest landed cost?
Not necessarily. Compare the same scope, route, destination charges and delivery responsibilities.
When should I check import costs?
Before ordering and again before shipment if rates, products or documentation change.
