Every few weeks someone sends us a list of forty Chinese building materials markets they found online and asks which ones to visit. The honest answer is that most of them are on the list because someone needed a long list. Perhaps a dozen matter for a foreign buyer, and which dozen depends on what you are buying and how much of it.
This is our own ranking. It is opinionated, and it is based on where we actually take buyers, not on square metres or how many brands a market claims. We have grouped the markets by how far they are from Foshan, because that is where most trips start, and ranked them by how likely a visit is to change the price or the quality of what you go home with. The second half of the article is the part most lists leave out: the markets we would skip, and why.
How to read the tables
Price tier is relative. Low means wholesale and export grades, quoted in RMB per square metre or per piece, with minimums. Mid means factory showrooms with proper branding where an export order of a container is normal business. High means branded showrooms aimed first at the Chinese domestic market; prices are negotiable, but from a higher base, and the showroom is not always the factory.
Days to allow assumes someone has shortlisted factories before you arrive. Walking in cold, with no appointments and no interpreter, roughly doubles every figure. Distance is driving time from central Foshan in normal traffic, which in the Pearl River Delta means 20 to 30 percent worse between 8 and 9.30 in the morning.

The first six are where most of our tile and bathroom orders are actually placed. China Ceramics City is the best first morning in Foshan we know of: four floors of showrooms, most brands present, and enough English on the ground to get a feel for the ranges before anyone talks numbers. It is not the cheapest place to buy, and we rarely place the order there. We use it to decide what you like, then go to the factory showrooms in Nanzhuang, where the same tile is made and the price is a factory price. Our page on the Foshan building materials market goes through this loop in more detail.
Huaxia and Cihai are ten minutes apart in Nanzhuang and serve different buyers. Huaxia is where the bigger tile groups keep their showrooms; walk in and you are usually talking to the factory’s own export staff. Cihai is more of a wholesale trading centre, and the tenants include a lot of trading companies, some good and some not. Prices are lower on paper and the grade is not always what the sample suggests, which is why we check who owns the kiln before anything is agreed. For sanitary ware, CASA is the showroom end and Jinguagang is the wholesale end; a villa buyer who cares about the look goes to one, a contractor buying forty toilets goes to the other.
Dali is not a pretty market. It is a district of aluminium extruders, profile wholesalers and hardware shops, and a foreign buyer with no fabricator will not get much from it directly. We take window buyers there to see profiles and hardware in the metal, then place the order with a fabricator who buys from those same suppliers. The same logic applies to Shunde: the kitchen showrooms in Lecong are useful, but the price is agreed at the cabinet factory in Beijiao or Longjiang, and that is where the drawings get checked.
Day trips from Foshan: markets 16 to 23
| # | Market | City | What it is for | Price tier | Days | From Foshan | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 | Guzhen lighting markets (Star Alliance, Times Lighting Square, Huayi Plaza, Lighting Era) | Zhongshan, Guzhen | Decorative and commercial lighting, thousands of showrooms | Low to high | 1 to 2 | 1 to 1.5 hr | Anyone buying more than about 50 fittings |
| 17 | Yunfu stone city and the yards along the highway | Yunfu | Marble, granite, quartz slabs and cut-to-size processing | Low to mid | 1 | 1.5 to 2 hr | Slabs, worktops, cladding for projects |
| 18 | Kaiping tap factories (Shuikou) | Jiangmen, Kaiping | Mixers, showers, valves; factories rather than a market | Low to mid | 1 | 1.5 to 2 hr | Importers; buyers wanting one brand across a project |
| 19 | Jiangmen bathroom hardware | Jiangmen | Stainless and brass accessories, sinks, fittings | Low to mid | 0.5 to 1 | 1 to 1.5 hr | Combine with Kaiping on the same day |
| 20 | Jinshazhou building materials markets | Guangzhou, Baiyun | Tiles, sanitary ware, doors, flooring for the domestic trade | Mid | 0.5 | 30 to 45 min | Contractors already based in Guangzhou |
| 21 | Anhua Decoration Materials Market | Guangzhou, Baiyun | Mixed decoration materials, paint, boards, lighting | Mid, retail leaning | 0.5 | 45 to 60 min | Small quantities; Guangzhou-based buyers |
| 22 | Panyu decoration city | Guangzhou, Panyu | Domestic renovation retail | Mid to high | 0.5 | 45 to 60 min | Rarely; see the skip list |
| 23 | Chaozhou sanitary ware (Fengxi and Guxiang) | Chaozhou | Ceramic toilets and basins at volume; factories and showrooms | Low | 2 | 4 to 5 hr by road, under 3 by train | Importers of basic lines by the container |
Guzhen is the one day trip we recommend to almost everyone. There is no equivalent in Foshan; the Lecong lighting malls are a fraction of it. Allow a full day, two if you are lighting a hotel, and go with a list, because the number of showrooms is a problem rather than a luxury. Our Guzhen guide covers how the town is laid out and which buildings suit which budgets.
Yunfu and Kaiping are both worth the drive when they are relevant and not otherwise. Yunfu is where we buy most stone; the market is a strip of showrooms and processing yards along the main road west of the city, and you can see the slab you are buying, which matters more with stone than with anything else. Kaiping’s Shuikou town is a cluster of tap factories, and there is no walk-in market to speak of, so it only works with appointments. Read the Yunfu stone article before you decide, and the Chaozhou versus Foshan comparison if your bathroom order is big and basic.
The Guangzhou markets are a mixed bag, and we have written them up separately in our Guangzhou markets guide. In short, Jinshazhou is a genuine trade market, Anhua is useful for odds and ends, and Panyu is for people renovating a flat in Panyu.
Further afield: markets 24 to 30
| # | Market | City | What it is for | Price tier | Days | From Foshan | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24 | Zibo ceramics markets and factories | Zibo, Shandong | Budget tiles for northern China and export | Low | 2 to 3 with travel | Flight to Jinan, then 1.5 hr | Price-led importers of standard tiles |
| 25 | Jinjiang tile factories (Ciyao and around) | Quanzhou, Fujian | Exterior tiles, roof tiles, cheaper porcelain | Low | 2 | Flight to Quanzhou or Xiamen | Facade and roofing volume orders |
| 26 | Shuitou stone market | Nan’an, Fujian | Largest stone trading area in China: imported and domestic blocks, slabs | Low to high | 2 | Flight to Quanzhou or Xiamen | Big stone packages; unusual materials |
| 27 | Nanxun flooring cluster | Huzhou, Zhejiang | Solid and engineered wood flooring | Low to mid | 1 | Flight to Hangzhou, then 1.5 hr | Wood flooring by the container |
| 28 | Haining flooring cluster | Jiaxing, Zhejiang | SPC, LVT, laminate and PVC flooring | Low | 1 | 1 hr from Hangzhou or Shanghai | Importers of resilient flooring |
| 29 | Linyi board markets | Linyi, Shandong | Plywood, MDF, OSB, film-faced formwork board | Low | 1 to 2 | Flight to Linyi or Qingdao | Construction board by the container |
| 30 | Yiwu International Trade City, hardware districts | Yiwu, Zhejiang | Locks, tools, fasteners, small hardware at low minimums | Low | 1 to 2 | Flight to Yiwu, or train from Hangzhou | Hardware ranges in small quantities |
None of these is a day trip from Foshan, and that is the whole question. A flight, a hotel night and a lost day cost real money and, more to the point, real time on a trip that is usually four or five days long. Zibo and Jinjiang make sense when you are buying two or more containers of standard tiles and the unit price is the only thing that matters; our Zibo and Jinjiang article puts numbers on it. Shuitou is bigger than Yunfu and has more imported stone, but for a villa or a single hotel Yunfu covers it. The Zhejiang flooring towns and Linyi are for importers of that one product, and they are usually a separate trip out of Shanghai or Qingdao rather than an add-on to Foshan.
Yiwu is a special case. It is a market for small hardware in small quantities, and it is very good at that. It is not a place to buy tiles, windows, stone or anything heavy, whatever the listings say, and a lot of what is sold there is made elsewhere. If your order is fifty door handle sets and a few hundred hinges, go; if it is a house, do not.
Skip these unless
Panyu decoration city and the smaller Guangzhou decoration malls are aimed at local families doing up a flat. Prices are retail, packing is for a van not a container, and the staff have no reason to learn export paperwork. Skip them unless you are living in Guangzhou and need a bathroom cabinet on Saturday.
The Lecong furniture malls are furniture malls. The signs promise doors, flooring and building materials, and there are a few such shops on the upper floors, but you will spend the day walking past sofas. Skip unless you are furnishing the same project, in which case a day there is genuinely useful and the export side is well practised.
Yonglijian, Hongyi and the other neighbourhood decoration markets around Foshan sell to local builders from stock. They are handy when a buyer realises on the last afternoon that they forgot the floor drains. They are not where you place an order, and we would not build a day around any of them.
Shiwan’s Shagang wholesale market is cheap, and cheap for a reason: a lot of what is on the pallets is seconds, discontinued lines and odd lots. Fine for a small job where shade matching does not matter. For a project needing one shade batch across 600 square metres, no.
Zibo and Jinjiang are covered above, but the point bears repeating because buyers keep asking: below about two containers of a single standard tile, the flights and the extra days eat the saving, and a Foshan factory will often match the price on a plainer grade anyway. Chaozhou is the same argument for sanitary ware. Good value at volume for basic lines; a long way to go for four bathrooms.
The window showrooms in Shanghai and the aluminium window clusters around it in Jiangsu and Zhejiang are worth knowing about if you are buying a European-style system window for a project in eastern China, or you have a specific brand in mind. For a foreign buyer starting from Foshan they are a two-day detour to see something the Nanhai fabricators make to the same standard at a wholesale price. Skip unless the brand is the point.
Finally, the Lecong lighting malls and the Nanhai LED market, both perfectly good, are only worth a stop if Guzhen is not on the itinerary. If it is, they are a repeat.
Opening hours and when the markets close
Most of the Foshan showroom markets, China Ceramics City, Huaxia, CASA, Meiju and the like, open around 9 or 9.30 and shut around 6, seven days a week. Saturdays and Sundays are busier with domestic customers, and the factory’s export manager, the person you want, is more likely to be at their desk on a weekday. The wholesale markets, Cihai, Jinguagang, Shagang, Dali, wind down from about 5 and are visibly emptier on Sunday. Lunch runs from noon to 2 across the board and shops do not close, but the decision-maker is often out. Guzhen keeps roughly 9 to 6, Monday to Saturday, and is quiet on Sunday. Yiwu runs 9 to 5 and is strict about it.
Chinese New Year is the big closure. In 2027 it falls on 6 February; the official holiday is about a week, but markets thin out ten days before and factories are typically shut for two to four weeks, with skilled workers drifting back through late February. Do not plan a buying trip between mid-January and the first week of March. National Day, 1 to 7 October, closes markets for the week and factories for a little longer. The May Day holiday, 1 to 5 May, is a shorter version of the same. Qingming in early April, Dragon Boat in June and Mid-Autumn in September or October each cost a day or three.
Trade fairs are the other thing to check. The Canton Fair runs in Guangzhou in April and October and fills hotels across the region, including Foshan, at double the normal rate. The Guzhen autumn lighting fair is 22 to 25 October in 2026, and the spring edition is usually in March; the markets are open and busy during the fair, which is good for range and bad for attention. Foshan’s own ceramics fair, in the spring and again in the autumn, is a good week to see new tile ranges and a bad week to get an export manager’s undivided time.
Getting around
Foshan is about an hour from Guangzhou Baiyun airport by car and 45 minutes from Guangzhou South railway station, which is where the high-speed trains from Hong Kong West Kowloon and Shenzhen arrive. The Guangzhou-Foshan metro line is useful for getting into the city and useless for the markets, which are spread across industrial districts with no station within walking distance. You need a car.
Ride-hailing works if you have set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you arrive, and it is cheap; the difficulty is not the ride but telling a driver which of three similarly named ceramics markets you mean. Street taxis rarely take cards. Our buyers travel in our car with one of us driving, which is part of the service rather than an extra, and it is the reason a day in Nanzhuang covers six factories rather than three. Stay in Chancheng, around Zumiao or Jihua Road, if tiles and bathrooms are the main event; stay in Shunde if kitchens or furniture are. Details are in our visiting Foshan page, and the shape of a typical trip is on the buying trips page.
A note on prices: every figure in this guide is an indicative estimate from recent orders. Factory prices, freight rates and exchange rates move, so treat them as a planning guide and ask us for a current quote before you budget.
Frequently asked questions
Can I see all the important Foshan markets in one day?
You can drive past them in one day. Seeing them properly, with time to talk to factory staff and take samples, needs two days for tiles and bathrooms and a third if windows or kitchens are on the list. A good first day is China Ceramics City in the morning and Nanzhuang in the afternoon.
Are the markets open at weekends?
The showroom markets in Foshan are, and so is Guzhen on Saturdays. The catch is that the person with authority to agree an export price is more likely to be in on a weekday. If your trip has to include a weekend, use it for looking and keep the negotiating for Monday.
Which market has the lowest prices for tiles?
On paper, Cihai and the Shiwan wholesale market in Foshan, or Zibo and Jinjiang if you leave Guangdong. In practice the lowest price for a given grade comes from the factory that makes it, and the market is just where you find the factory. A low price for a lower grade is not a saving, and the grade is the first thing to ask about.
Do I need appointments, or can I walk in?
The showroom markets welcome walk-ins. Factories, and the clusters that are really groups of factories such as Kaiping or Shunde, do not; a foreign buyer arriving unannounced meets a security guard. We book the factory visits before you fly and leave the showroom mornings unscheduled.
Is it worth going to Yiwu for building materials?
For small hardware in small quantities, yes, and it is the best place in China for that. For anything heavy, made-to-measure or graded, no. Yiwu is a separate trip from Foshan in any case, roughly two hours by air, and most buyers who go do so for a hardware range rather than a house.
